How Volsun Developed a Custom Dust-Proof Shaft Grounding Ring for Harsh Industrial Environments
Standard Shaft Grounding Was Not Enough
A shaft grounding ring is designed to protect motor bearings by safely discharging shaft currents. It is an effective solution for preventing electrical bearing damage in motors driven by variable frequency drives (VFDs).
However, not every application operates in the same environment.
Recently, one of our customers contacted Volsun with a special request. Their motors worked in a dusty industrial environment where fine particles were constantly present. While a standard shaft grounding ring could effectively discharge shaft current, the customer also wanted additional protection to help prevent dust from entering the bearing area.
Understanding the Customer's Requirements
After several technical discussions, our engineering team gained a clear understanding of the customer's operating conditions and installation requirements.
The customer wanted to keep the excellent grounding performance of the existing shaft grounding ring while adding a sealing structure that could better suit their dusty working environment. At the same time, the new design needed to match the original motor dimensions and remain easy to install without affecting normal operation.
This was not simply an accessory added to an existing product. It required a redesign of the overall structure while ensuring the shaft grounding ring continued to perform reliably.
A Customized Dust-Proof Shaft Grounding Ring
Based on the customer's requirements, Volsun engineers developed a new customized shaft grounding ring with an integrated dust-proof cover.
The additional sealing structure was carefully incorporated into the original design without affecting the conductive fibers that continuously contact the motor shaft. This allows the shaft current to be discharged effectively while providing an extra barrier against dust entering the bearing area.
Every detail, including the dimensions, sealing structure and installation method, was optimized according to the customer's motor and application conditions. The final design achieved a balance between electrical performance, mechanical reliability and ease of installation.
From Design to Mass Production
The project began with repeated communication between our engineering team and the customer to fully understand the application environment. After confirming the design concept, detailed drawings were completed and prototype samples were manufactured for testing.
The customer then carried out installation trials under actual operating conditions. Based on the feedback, several structural details were refined before the final design was approved.
After successful sample verification, the project entered mass production smoothly, providing the customer with a solution that fully met both performance and installation requirements.
