VOLSUN Hosts EV Motor Shaft Current Mitigation Technical Workshop in Suzhou
VOLSUN (Suzhou Volsun Electronics Technology Co., Ltd.) hosted the Electric Drive Systems Working Group Meeting and EV Motor Shaft Current Mitigation Technical Workshop in Suzhou, China, on October 27, 2026.

Organized by the Electric Vehicle Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance's Electric Drive Systems Working Group, the meeting brought together representatives from automakers, electric drive system manufacturers, bearing suppliers, material companies, universities, and research institutions.
The workshop focused on three technical standardization initiatives addressing shaft current mitigation and motor bearing reliability.
Industry Experts Visit VOLSUN
Before the technical sessions, participating representatives visited VOLSUN's facilities to learn about its functional materials, shaft grounding ring products, manufacturing practices, and engineering applications.

The meeting subsequently continued at the Suzhou Tianping Hotel.
VOLSUN Chairman Zhu Xiaoyong welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of collaboration across the automotive supply chain.
The event also coincided with VOLSUN's 20th anniversary, reflecting the company's continued commitment to material innovation and industrial applications.
Three Technical Approaches to Shaft Current Mitigation
As electric vehicle powertrains evolve toward higher voltages, faster switching frequencies, and higher motor speeds, shaft voltage and bearing current have become important considerations in electric motor reliability engineering.
The workshop addressed three technical approaches:
Common-Mode Suppression Magnetic Cores
Xu Lei of CITIC Metal introduced the proposed technical specification for magnetic cores designed to suppress high-frequency common-mode currents.

Shaft Grounding Rings
Li Xin, Application Technology Manager at VOLSUN, presented the proposed technical specification for shaft grounding rings used in electric drive motor bearing current mitigation.

Shaft grounding rings provide a low-impedance conductive path between the rotating shaft and the motor housing, helping reduce the risk of electrical bearing damage under appropriate operating conditions.
Insulated Bearings
Xu Xiaoyang of SKF Automotive Technology (Shanghai) presented the proposed technical specification for insulated bearings, focusing on electrical insulation performance and reliability evaluation.

Each approach addresses different electrical current paths and operating conditions. Selecting an appropriate protection strategy requires consideration of motor design, electrical characteristics, operating environments, and validation requirements.
Advancing Industry Collaboration and Technical Standardization
During the discussions, industry experts exchanged views on technical requirements, application conditions, testing methodologies, and long-term reliability.
The working group plans to continue gathering industry feedback and advancing the development of the relevant technical specifications.
As the event host, VOLSUN remains committed to supporting technical exchanges, material innovation, and engineering validation for electric motor reliability.
